Pharmacy Compounding is a science of creating a customized medication for patients.
Before the pharmaceutical companies became the mass manufacturers of medications, pharmacist were compounding most of the medications for their patients.
With the recent advancement of technology, pharmacy compounding has become popular once again, especially for the elderly and children who may have issues with swallowing the most common dosage forms of available medications (tablets and capsules).
Compounded medications are made from scratch by combining raw ingredients into forms such as:
- Creams and ointments
- Solutions, emulsions and suspensions (can be flavoured)
- Capsules and tablets
- Transdermal gels
- Lip balms
- Lollipops, lozenges
